Light pants against the sheets, shivers under L’s finger and hisses as his hair is pulled again. “Isn’t that how it goes, Light?” L continues, dragging a finger slowly down his spine towards his ass “You beg and I worship?” Light nods desperately and L responds by pushing his head harder against the mattress, grip hard and purposeful. #Death note rules mu series#
In a series about characters who have such a wide variety of ideas about morality and justice, this could not be more perfect.Wiltedcherries Fandoms: Death Note (Anime & Manga), Death Note & Related Fandoms …which in the context of Zen Buddhism and its usage of “mu” can be interpreted to mean: “T here is no place to go because no ‘place’ ever existed.”Īs Ryuk explains it, “death is equal.” Whether you are a person who has lived a moral life or an immoral life, or even if you’re a shinigami, death is equal. To tie that back to Zen Buddhism and “mu,” the implied loaded question here is Check out this scene below.Īs you can see Ryuk clearly states, “I thought all humans seriously believed in heaven and hell…” This is interesting because that exact expectation is explicitly spelt out in Chapter 107. The concept of life after death is, perhaps, so culturally ingrained that the disconnect may not be immediately apparent, but it’s as if the rules themselves are addressing an implicit question: “where do people go after they die?” which is to say, there’s a built in expectation here that the audience assumes there to be a place to go after death. What stuck out to me is the fact that there’s a bit of a non-sequitur here.

#Death note rules mu how to#
In Death Note “mu” specifically comes up is at the end of the series when we are given two How to Use Rules. Answering ‘mu’ would be the rough equivalent of saying “no because I’ve never beaten my souse.” Or more generally, “the assumption leading to the framing of this question is false.” If you’re asked a loaded question, you could answer with “mu.” To give an example, if you, a loving partner, are asked the question “Do you beat your spouse with a club?” A simple negation doesn’t negate the validity of this line of questioning. One simple way you can think about “Mu” is that it’s a word used to negate a logical fallacy. “Nothingness” is also potentially confusing as a translation because it can be used to describe Limbo or Purgatory, neither of which are what “mu” is really getting at. In Zen the word is not used to indicate a physical place. 無 was translated as “nothingness,” which in the context of Zen Buddhism requires a bit of an explanation. This is actually not the only place where Ohba derived inspiration from Zen Buddhism the concept of “Mu” ( 無) is derived from it as well. In HTR13, Ohba states that he chose to end Death Note in 108 chapters because the number 108 is significant in Zen Buddhism. So this is one of my favorite points about Death Note and I’m just going to ramble about it because this just makes me really happy.
